Together against hatred: Religious leaders stand up against religious discrimination

Berlin, 12.08.2021
According to the current study of the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, discrimination against refugees, immigrants and migrants has increased significantly within the Corona pandemic. In particular, in social networks, discriminatory and racist discourses against migrants and refugees are intensified. These thus become targets for hate speech, exclusion and even acts of violence.

On August 12, 2021 HWPL organized the Online Religious Peace Camp, under the motto to stop religious discrimination, around 96 participants from Germany, France, Czech Republic with a wide range of faiths participated. Representatives of Islam, Christianity and Bahaism exchanged views on the current situation of their respective religious communities and discussed the acute problem of religious discrimination, its origins and what potential solutions can be used against it.

Prof. Dr. Hafiz M. Irfan Awan, Europe Info Point of Frankfurt am Main said, "Many members of religious or faith communities are discriminated against because of their religion or belief. They are hindered in exercising their civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights." Members of different faith communities are also often already discriminated against when it comes to accessing public facilities, educational institutions, fitness opportunities or public offices, he said. In this regard, he said, it is necessary to establish guidelines to prevent religious discrimination, train educators, social workers and employees accordingly, and employ a zero-tolerance policy toward religious discrimination.

Imam Sergiu of Moldova emphasized, "Inter-religious dialogues through events like this are crucial to establish harmony, love, trust and common coexistence within different religions." The Peace Camp provides a platform for raising awareness about religious discrimination and for HWPL to work with religious representatives of all faiths to promote peace and cohesion in society. This goal will continue at the international 7th anniversary HWPL World Peace Summit on September 18 participants from over 120 countries.

HWPL is an international peace organization working for global peace and the peaceful ending of war in over 100 countries worldwide. As an international NGO with consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it is also affiliated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC). Through peace work, educational programs, and interfaith dialogues, HWPL works closely with representatives from society, politics, education, and religion to advance the building of peace through joint collaboration.
